1. Wash your face.
a. It sounds simple, but is so often overlooked in the busy life of a teen. Twice a day is best, but if you can only remember to do it once, make sure it’s before bed.Makeup lovers – going to bed with makeup on will only clog your pores and increase inflammation.
2. Wash your hair.
a. Especially if you use hair products, those beautiful locks are so close to your face and oil and product can clog up pores. Clean hair also prevents those pesky zits along your hairline.
3. Wash your pillowcase.
a. At least once per week. Yep. Especially if you have slacked off tip #1 and #2. Residual makeup, bacteria, dirt and oil can build up on your pillowcase night after night. This can wreak some serious havoc on your skin! If you have sensitive skin and are particularly prone to breakouts, you should also be conscious of the type of detergent you use – always use fragrance-free detergents and avoid fabric softener, too.
a. While teen skin produces more oil than mature skin, it’s still important to moisturize. If you dry out your skin too much, it will start to overproduce oils which will lead to unnecessary breakouts. Skin needs hydration – a light moisturizer will help balance oil production and will avoid tightness and irritation.
5. Resist the urge to pop those zits.
a. Your fingers touch everything and are huge transfers of bacteria which will only make those breakouts worse. The more you touch a zit, the angrier it will be with you and the longer it will take to heal. Instead, keep the area clean and apply a topical spot treatment.
